Everything x Tyneside Cinema

Tyneside Cinema is an independent cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is the city's only full-time independent cultural cinema, specialising in the screening of independent and world cinema from across the globe.

Each month, Tyneside Cinema launch a short film season celebrating the best in independent cinema. Past seasons have been based on Greta Gerwig, Wes Anderson, Harrison Ford and much, much more.

The summer time is usually the quietest time for cinemas across the country due to school holidays, people on vacation and of course the higher temperatures of the weather. Do people really want to spend their summer indoors?

Everything will choose the best five ideas and ask you to present to the Everything team (and possibly Tyneside Cinema staff) in person. We will then choose the preferred creative, and that person will receive a one-week placement at Everything at a time convenient to the individual.

The Summer of Cinema Brief:

The Problem:

Tyneside Cinema requires new creative for a brand new, thrilling season that relates to the summertime. The suggested season title is Summer of Cinema, but if you feel like there is a better alternative, we are happy to see/hear suggestions.

In 2022, Tyneside Cinema ran a campaign with the same name where the look and feel was loosely based on the psychedelic 60s ‘summer of love’. The campaign and styling proved to be successful, however we would like a fresh approach to creative this year.

The campaign will run for the duration of the school 6-week holidays, and we are asking people to ‘ditch the sun cream and hit the big screen’. Usually, the items created for each season are posters, social media posts and stories, films/animations, and printed communications such as flyers or a programme/what’s on guide. In this instance we are looking for the most adventurous and creative idea. Therefore, submissions could include anything from season style or a logo, to a clothing range, a festival, a TV advert and more… We want you to use your own individual flair and skillset to push the boundaries and create something memorable.

What the season must have is a clear style. You can also use images of individual films to help sell the idea to the audience.

Audience:

The primary aim of the new season is to appeal to Tyneside Cinema’s very loyal existing customers. Tyneside Cinema receives over 400,000 visitors a year., with the majority are repeat customers.

The secondary aim is to appeal to a new customer base. This could include people who have never seen a film at Tyneside Cinema before, it could be school children (and parents) and even people from outside of Newcastle. Therefore, it is important that the design style uses relevant content and would appeal to both primary and secondary audiences.
